Computers Have Multifarious Uses
If you are asked about one thing that virtually controls our life, your answer would be computers. In fact, we cannot imagine our life without computers or its multiple applications. So if you are working in a normal office, you will need a desktop, laptop, tablet, and a printer that are all different forms of computer.
And while you are travelling, you are using Google Maps and navigation which is again a computer application. When you plan to go to a restaurant or a pub, first you check the user’s review on the internet which is again a computer oriented technology.
If you are planning a weekend holiday, you do your hotel booking, flight booking, and cab booking through apps like makemytrip.com, yatra.com, irctc.co.in or goibibo.com. Now, all these apps are accessed through your smartphone, which is also a miniature form of computer. Actually, most of the mobile phones that we see today are more advanced than the regular computers of a few years ago.
Future of Computer
There is no doubt that computers have a major role to play in our day-to-day life. However, considering that we have reached almost a saturation point in computer technology, VIRTEX will it still be relevant in the near future? Even a hitech company like Apple is not able to come out with something new, or something out of the box. The recently launched iPhone 13 was a big disappointment because it offered no fresh features.
In recent times, most innovations took place in the field of smartphones in areas such as design, storage, RAM, Camera etc. Unfortunately, the same was not true in the field of computers as not even half of such innovations took place.
Let us talk about why the design of computers does not see major changes.
Why do we see less innovations in computer design?
There is no doubt that there is a huge difference between what smartphones looked like 10 years ago and how they appear today. You can soon expect the screen to be visible on the front of the phone while the selfie camera will also be hidden under the display. And talking of change in the laptop’s design, it will most probably happen in their thickness and weight. So, in the near future, you will have sleeker and lightweight laptops, something you expect from a company like Apple.
There are two main reasons behind this. Computer-related technology has evolved faster, and reached a saturation point. It’s not as if further development won’t take place in this field. The computer technology will still grow but not at a pace it did earlier. It will take some time before a quantum jump takes place in this area. However, smartphones are a new technology in comparison to computers, so changes in design and hardware are taking place faster.
Moreover, an average mobile phone user replaces his handset in 1-2 years, while an average life of a laptop is longer. A good smartphone is available for ten thousand rupees, but a professional laptop costs five times more. Therefore, a laptop cannot be replaced as easily as a smartphone. It is also true that when we buy the latest model, we expect new features that were not there in the earlier model.
Future of computers
Smartphones and computers both serve different purposes. While smartphones are great for taking photos, and more convenient because you can carry it anywhere you go, a computer is more suited for professional work. Moreover, because of a big screen, better storage and more RAM, it’s ideal for office work. For example, if you need to prepare a presentation, you would choose a computer over a smartphone; because it is easier to do such work on a computer. However, computers will still be in use for these reasons:
Multitasking
These days, smartphones are equipped with split screen features, but the large screen size in computers still makes them the first choice for multitasking.
Storage
Nowadays even basic laptops come with 1 TB of storage, which is much more than the 64 GB that you get with most smartphones. Besides, you can also add on to your existing storage as much as you want in your PC. Therefore, when you are working on a computer, you can be relaxed that whatever storage you need, it will be there. The same is not true when you are working on a smartphone. You will always be apprehensive whether your mobile will be up for the task or not.
Processors
Although mobile processors are becoming increasingly advanced, they are still not as powerful as the processors of computers. Therefore, when you need a more advanced and a faster system, you go to a computer and not to your mobile. As a matter of fact, mobile has not been designed to do demanding tasks. The main benefits of mobiles are its portability. You can literally take it anywhere. However, these days’ laptops are also lighter and sleeker.
Software
Desktops and laptops are more suited for different kinds of software. There is not even single software that is not compliant with a normal computer. So, when you are downloading particular software, you know it will run on your computer. However, this is not the case with mobiles. There is much software that you cannot access through a mobile. For example, software’s such as Adobe Creative Cloud, 3D Studio etc do not run on a mobile. However, smartphones are better mediums than computers when you need to install social media applications such as Facebook, Instagram, Connect app or for that matter any other Indian social media app. In fact, the majority of social media activities are accessed through mobiles only.
Additional reasons
Activities like typing with a normal keyboard, navigation with a mouse, etc. are some of the features that make working on computers very convenient. Moreover, we are used to doing serious things on a computer because they have been around for a long time. However, with the advent of advanced tablets and foldable phones, the gap between a computer and a mobile device is fast diminishing. In the near future, we may see computers being used less frequently than today.
